|Description:||Ethics of Security/Security of Ethics: The possibilities and limits of critical security studies|
|Location:||Coventry, University of Warwick, Scarman House, United Kingdom|
|Subject:||The aim of this workshop is bring together authors working around the nexus of this dichotomy ethics of security/security of ethics, not as an exercise in flag waving, but rather to develop a critical interrogation of this important if problematic subject. Key questions that participants might address include: - Is an ethical approach to security possible? - Is progress possible through security and, if so, how is this to be conceptualised/ realised? - Is there an inherent logic or dominant discourse of security that must necessarily be escaped for progress to be realised? - What ethical commitments underpin contemporary practices of security? - What ethical commitments underpin the practices of those resisting security? - What ethical commitments underpin contemporary practices of theorising security? - Are we just securitizing ethics? - Is de-securitisation an ethic? - Is it possible to de-construct/resist the dichotomy between ethics and security?
