British Living Standards Project BLS
- June 22-23, 2012
- Workshop on ??The evolution of living standards 1880-1960 in Britain and beyond.
- Falmer, Conference Centre, University of Sussex, United Kingdom
- This workshop is hosted by the ESRC-funded British Living Standards project at the University of Sussex. The intention is to gather together leading contributors to the study of the rise in living standards over the pre-affluence period in Britain, but also in the wider industrialising world. This period saw great improvements in living standards, whether measured economically, or by health or anthropometric indicators. From an economic perspective, three factors are the proximate determinants of the path of per capita incomes in the period.- First, the major part of the demographic transition, in particular large declines in infant mortality and total fertility, occurred in this period resulting in a decline in the dependency ratio.- Secondly, real wages rose significantly, especially, in Britain, between the beginning of WW1 and the beginning of WW2 and again in the 1950s.- Thirdly, economic inequality declined somewhat, so the poor were, by and large, included in the improvement of living standards. For this workshop we seek empirical papers that shed light upon the paths of fertility, infant mortality, real wages and household income inequality for any of the industrial countries of Western Europe and North America. Especially welcome are papers that exploit new data sets, but, of course innovative uses of known data sources are also welcome.[gem?_?? den Informationen des Anbieters - according to site editor's information]
