International Conference "Negotiating capitalism in Central and Eastern Europe? Chances and barriers to trade union revitalisation from a comparative perspective"
Wroclaw, Institute of Sociology, University of Wrocław, Poland
The questions which this workshop aims to address include: - How shall we explain the emergence of attempts to revitalize trade unions in some countries in the region and their absence and weakness in other countries? - Did recent economic crisis contribute to more pro-active trade union strategies or fostered their further marginalisation? - To what extent do the patterns of trade union revitalisation converge with those observed in Western capitalist economies? - What is the real impact of innovative trade union strategies at the various levels of trade union structure on workers?? situation in CEE? - Can trade union top-down and bottom-up strategies contribute to the transformation of capitalist regimes that emerged in CEE? Or do they merely reproduce the position of CEE countries as ???dependent market economies?? ? Comparative research on the problems of trade union organising, transnational labour solidarity, organising CEE migrant workers at home and abroad, collective bargaining innovations, social movement unionism, the old and new forms of political mobilisation of trade unions will be particularly welcome. The conference will also include a panel about the tentative results of the project financed by the Foundation for Polish Science on trade union revitalisation strategies in Estonia, Poland, Romania and Slovenia.
