FRB of St. Louis: FRED

The major resource of the St. Louis Fed is FRED (for "Federal Reserve Economic Data"), their macro database. In all, more than 3,000 different macro, monetary, and financial time series are available from a variety of different sources. Information in this source is current, relatively extensive, easily available, and easily downloaded.

Data comes in the following categories:

  • Banking
  • Business/Fiscal
  • Consumer Price Indexes (CPI)
  • Employment & Population
  • Exchange Rates
  • Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and Components
  • Interest Rates
  • Monetary Aggregates
  • Producer Price Indexes (PPI)
  • Reserves and Monetary Base
  • U.S. Trade & International Transactions
  • U.S. Financial Data
  • FRB-St. Louis District Dat
  • Each category consists of a large number of series. Each series is available in an ASCII file, spreadsheet file, and plot (with a choice of time spans). Each group or the entire dataset can also be downloaded. Most series are available for long or very long periods, and the most recent values are quite current. You can also arrange for new data to be e-mailed to you, and you can store lists of their data on your account there.

The parent site also offers information on the St. Louis Fed and the Federal Reserve System, banking information, community affairs, economic research, and educational opportunities. Articles, data, and programs from the St. Louis Fed "Review" since 1993 are available here.
